3. Start Date	April 1st, 2011 (expected date)
Term of Employment	Until March 31st, 2012. Contract would be extendable up to March 31st, 2013 after screening.
4. Job Content	1) The applicant will conduct research within the general purposes of the present program, and give presentations in domestic/international conferences as well as publish their academic results in journals/books. 2) The applicant will perform various tasks related to the program. Especially (1) Editing an English-language academic journal issued by the GCOE; (2) Conducting various international joint research programs, organizing and delivering symposiums and workshops, as well as producing the publications of the program; (3) Giving lectures as a teaching staff member in the course of the GCOE education program.
5. Qualification Requirements	1) The applicant must have keen interest in the subject of "Reconstruction of the Intimate and Public Spheres in Asian Societies (including Japan)", as well as in developing an international research network. 2) The applicant must hold a Ph.D. degree on the day of arriving at the post. A Ph.D. degree obtained outside Japan is desirable. However, we also accept applicants with an outstanding academic record who expect to obtain their Ph.D. degree within the present academic year. 3) Any nationality is acceptable, but the applicant must have sufficient English language ability to edit academic journals and organize international conferences, and they must also have sufficient Japanese language ability to perform the aforementioned job contents. 4) From the time of taking up the post, the applicant; ・may not hold another full-time job. ・may not be a research fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, or obtain any other type of research promotion. ・must live within commuting distance of Kyoto University.
6. Terms of Contract	1) Working hours are according to a discretionary labor system of approximately 38 hours and 45 minutes per week. 2) Payment is based on the applicant's academic history and achievements on an annual salary system according to the University’s standard criteria. 3) The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Mutual Society of Health Insurance and Employment Insurance are provided.

4. Job Content:

1) The applicant will conduct research within the general purposes of the present program, and give presentations at domestic/international conferences as well as publish their academic results in journals/books.

　平成20年度に採択された京都大学グローバルCOEプログラム「親密圏と公共圏の再編成をめざすアジア拠点」では、別紙の要領で、グローバルCOE研究員（短時間勤務）を公募します。

４．職務内容

１）本プログラムの趣旨に適う研究を実施し、その成果を発表すること。

２）本プログラムの運営に関連する各種業務、たとえばワークショップ、セミナー、教育活動などに協力すること。

３）海外パートナー拠点等において調査研究および本プログラム関連業務に従事すること。

５．応募資格

１）アジア（日本を含む）の「親密圏と公共圏の再編成」に関して研究関心をもち、この分野の開拓と国際的研究ネットワークの構築に意欲を有する次世代研究者。この課題に関連する研究内容である限り、専門分野は問わない。

２）採用時において博士号を取得していること。ただし、近い将来に博士号取得の見込みがある者、および博士号取得と同等の業績がある者についても考慮する。

３）国籍は問わないが、本プログラムの運営に関連する各種業務を遂行するのに支障をきたさない程度の英語能力および日本語能力を有すること。

４）採用時において、以下の条件に適うこと。

・大学院等の学籍を有さず、本職以外の常勤の職(日本学術振興会特別研究員等を含む)を有さないこと。

・原則として勤務地（京都大学大学院文学研究科）に通勤可能な地に居住すること。

６．雇用条件および待遇

１）週1日1時間

２）待遇は時間雇用教職員とし、時給は学位取得者は1700円、未取得者は1500円とする。

３）本GCOEや文学研究科の海外派遣等各種プログラムに応募することができる。

My research field is modern Japanese literature. I am mainly investigating sources of the fiction of Edogawa Rampo. At first glance, this work may seem quite removed from our program’s theme, “Reconstruction of the Intimate and Public Spheres.”

Born in Meiji 27 (1894) when the Sino-Japanese War was in progress, Edogawa Rampo’s life extended from the Meiji, to the Taisho and Showa eras — a period in which the customs and mores of the Japanese people went through sweeping changes. Today, more than 40 years since his death in 1970, we find some of the names and terms he created being used even in descriptions of persons involved in big social events — names such as “kaijin” (mystery man) — as well as names of main and side characters in popular manga and anime creations. Before you know it, you will run into names with a connection to Rampo’s works. It is no exaggeration to say that even persons who have never heard of Rampo or who have absolutely no interest in mystery stories have at one time or another heard one of the names of a character in his works. In other words, Rampo’s work has quietly worked its way into the psyche of the Japanese people.

Rampo is primarily regarded as the “father of the true mystery store in Japan.” I am often asked if I like mystery or detective stories when I tell people I am studying the works of Rampo. Actually, I am not that much of a mystery fan. If I were asked what type of literature I like best, I would say classical poetry such as the Kokin Wakashu or Ise Monogatari. Moreover, I didn’t particularly like modern literature before I entered college, and I often ask myself why, despite this, I find myself studying the work of Rampo.

It is well known that the pen name Edogawa Rampo was taken from America’s Edgar Allan Poe, and it is presumed that Rampo was heavily influenced by European and American mystery novels. To what extent is this true? Rampo was born in 1894 in Nabari-city in Mie prefecture—a time and a place where many traces of the Edo era could be seen in the folkways of the people. Actually, traditional Japanese customs, old superstitions and popular beliefs are adopted in his work. When one reads the works of Rampo, it is absolutely necessary to consider the social environment at the time of each of his stories.

One theme I want to pursue in my research on Rampo is the way one can trace the major cultural transformations that have occurred in Japan in his work. It is in this sense that the apparently unrelated study of Rampo as part of modern Japanese literature actually has an “intimate” connection to our program.

「本格創作探偵小説」と変化する日本人の姿

私の専門分野は、日本近代文学である。主に、江戸川乱歩の作品材源追究を行っている。一見すると、この研究テーマは、「親密圏と公共圏の再編成をめざす」という、本プログラムの趣旨とはかけ離れているという印象を与えるのではないか。

江戸川乱歩は、明治二七年、日清戦争の最中に誕生し、大正時代から第二次世界大戦を経て、昭和四五年に亡くなった。日本人の生活習慣や習俗が激しい変遷を見せた明治、大正、昭和の三つの時代を生きた。まもなく没後五〇年を迎えようとする現在、人気漫画、アニメの主人公や脇役の名に使用されていたり、社会的事件の犯人の呼称に、「怪人」という乱歩の造語が用いられるなど、思わぬところで乱歩にゆかりのある名称を目にすることも多い。乱歩の名や、彼の作品に登場する人物の名は、推理小説にまったく関心のない人々でも一度は耳にしたことがあるといっても過言ではないのではないか。いわば、人々の生活に地味に浸透している国民的作家といえる。

しかし、彼の評価はやはり、「日本における本格創作探偵小説の父」であるという点にあるだろう。その乱歩を研究テーマにしているのだから、ミステリー好きかとよく問われる。だが、私は推理小説やミステリーはあまり好きではないし、好きな本は、と聞かれれば、古今和歌集と伊勢物語を挙げる。しかも、大学入学までは、現代文という教科も好きではなかった。それなのに、なぜ乱歩の研究に従事しているのかと自問することがしばしばある。江戸川乱歩という筆名は、アメリカのエドガー・アラン・ポーからとったものだということは比較的有名であろう。その筆名ゆえか、欧米の推理小説に強い影響を受けていると思われがちである。実際はどうなのか。

そもそも、乱歩は明治二七年、今の三重県名張市生れ、人々の生活習慣には、いまだ江戸時代の名残が多かった時代、土地である。実際、彼の作品には、日本の伝統的な習慣や古い迷信、民間信仰が多く採択されている。乱歩の作品を読むにあたって、その時代の日本人を取り巻く環境を考慮に入れることは、必須条件なのである。乱歩を研究テーマとして取り上げるということは、大きく変貌した日本文化の足跡をたどることでもあると考えている。この意味で、本プログラムとは無関係に見える日本近代文学という分野における乱歩の研究とは、実は「親密な」関係にあるのだ。

１．【趣旨】本グローバルCOEプログラムが重点的に推進する「アジア版エラスムス・パイロット計画」の一環として、海外の大学・研究機関等への教員の派遣を行います。派遣された教員は、滞在先の大学・研究機関等にて本プログラムの趣旨に沿った教育・研究に従事し、グローバルな研究者ネットワーク形成に寄与します。

２．【応募資格】

本プログラムの基盤となる６研究科および２研究所（文学研究科、法学研究科、教育学研究科、経済学研究科、農学研究科、人間・環境学研究科、人文科学研究所、地域研究統合情報センター）の専任教員。

３．【派遣先および期間】

派遣先：本プログラムの海外パートナー拠点大学・研究機関、もしくは他の海外大学・研究機関。

派遣期間：1カ月を超えない期間で、毎年度2月末までの計画を対象とします。

（出発は4月23日以降、帰国は2月末日までとする）

４．【待遇】往復の航空運賃、および滞在費を支給します。滞在先での資格その他については個別のケースごとに派遣先と協議します。

５．【オブリゲーション】

（１）派遣先において、本グローバルCOEの趣旨に沿った教育・研究に従事する。

（２）派遣終了後すみやかに報告書を提出する。

（３）本プログラムによる派遣の成果を、学術誌もしくは本プログラムの出版物に論文として発表する。発表に際しては本プログラムの支援を受けたことを明記する。

GCOEでは国際ジャーナルへの投稿、国際学会での発表、および英語による出版を促進するため、英語論文執筆支援を充実させたいと考えております。今年度も、英語論文の執筆に関して下記の要領で支援を実施します。

支援内容：国際ジャーナルへの投稿、国際学会での発表、その他英文出版を目的とした、

(A)英語論文の英文校閲

(B)日本語原稿の英訳

の費用が支援の対象となります。

★補助にあたっては審査が行われます。

★申請時に英訳の対象となる原稿が完成していることが条件です。

★英文校閲者および英訳者の手配は申請者が行ってください。

★英文校閲および英訳の費用は GCOEの基準により算出します。そのため、単価によっては自己負担が発生する可能性があります。また、校閲者や英訳者は信頼のおける方(業者)に依頼してください。そうでない場合、支援ができなくなる可能性があります。

★常識ではありますが、日本語の既発表論文をそのまま翻訳して国際ジャーナルに投稿することはできません。投稿先の規定に従いくれぐれも注意してください。

Call for Papers - Joint East Asian Social Policy Research Network (EASP) and
United Kingdom Social Policy Association (SPA) Annual Conference 2012,
‘Social Policy in an Unequal World’, 16th-18th July 2012, University of
York, UK.

EASP (www.welfareasia.org) and SPA (www.social-policy.org.uk) will be
holding a joint annual conference in July 2012, bringing together two of the
largest academic social policy conferences within a single event for the
first time.

The theme for the conference will be ‘Social Policy in an Unequal World’.
We particularly wish to invite paper proposals that reflect on this theme,
however interpreted, and hope to encourage debate on: inequality globally;
inequality within countries; cross-national comparisons of inequality; the
impact of international institutions and processes on inequality and on the
delivery of welfare; the increased concentration of income and wealth
amongst the rich; the ongoing impact of the financial crisis on national
social policies and welfare reform processes. However, we invite papers on
any aspect of social policy within any country/countries of the world and
stress that papers from outside of this theme will be accommodated, as is
the usual practice for the EASP and SPA annual conferences.

In addition to single papers, we are also strongly encourage proposals for
symposia, whereby three or more abstracts linked to a particular theme are
submitted together for consideration. Symposia will potentially allow
participants to engage more deeply with their special interests and create a
space for focused debate on a specific theme.

For papers, abstracts of 200 to 400 words should be submitted as a Word or .
rtf email attachment to york2012@social-policy.com. Proposals for symposia
should consist of a 200 word outline of the aims of the symposium together
with contributors’ abstracts. Proposals will be reviewed by a Programme
Committee prior to acceptance. The closing date for the submission of
abstracts and proposals is Wednesday 29th February 2012. Full papers must be
submitted electronically to the same address by 30 June 2012.

Postgraduates are also invited to attend the conference. Options for
participation include: a presentation in a regular conference stream; a
presentation in a session closed to postgraduates only; and show-casing your
research in a poster presentation. You can also join forces with your peers
and submit a proposal for a symposium, with three or four abstracts linked
to a particular theme. Please follow guidelines for submission as outlined
above. On your submission, it is essential that you record your status as a
postgraduate and mark your chosen option as: ‘Presentation’;
‘Symposium’; ‘Postgraduate presentation’; or ‘Poster’.

This workshop is an inquiry into the constitutive principles of intimate spheres that substitute for the family, from the point of view of Vietnamese women. Young anthropologists and sociologists from Japan, the United States, and Vietnam will give presentations on the two realms of religious organizations and official mass organizations, which have different political positions, discussing the nexus of women in these activities. While being given advice by the commenting professors, we hope to have a discussion involving all the participants. From an analysis of each case, we intend to sketch out (1) the quasi-familial character, (2) the character as an intimate sphere to replace the family, and (3) the public character that cannot be explained by comparisons with the family. In addition, from the viewpoint of the women who have crossed and returned over the boundary between the intimate and public spheres, we intend to clarify the features of a social space that can become a foundation for civil society in Vietnam.

Recollecting My First Night in a Vietnamese Village

In the autumn of 2002, as part of my research work, I began living in a village in central Vietnam.

The official in charge of cultural activities in the village guided me to where I would be staying — at the hut of his younger brother Tan. At the time Tan had just turned 20. A leading member of the village’s cultural performance group, he was an especially good dancer and singer.
That first night of my stay in the village, I found that there was only one bed in the hut, which I would have to share with Tan. We were to sleep together. It was a bit chilly that early autumn night, and there was only a single quilt to keep us warm.

I was unable to sleep. Tan had snuggled next to me and put his arm around me. I pushed the arm away. Nevertheless, Tan also was wrapping his leg up over mine. That plus a buzzing sound from the bamboo grove surrounding the hut kept me wide awake all night long.

The next day I went to Tan’s older brother’s house and asked if I could stay in another hut. I hadn’t intended to give any specific reason for my request, but some older women in the neighborhood were visiting, and they persistently asked me why I wanted to move. I couldn’t avoid giving an honest answer. The women laughed and told me not to worry. Tan said he had merely thought I might be cold and had clung to me to warm me up.

As it turned out, I ended up staying in the older brother’s house. I lived with the brother, his wife and his little boys. They bought a bed for me to sleep in.

Was this a case of me worrying too much? The Vietnamese have an expression “tinh cam (情感),” which can be translated as “consideration” or “sympathy.” This expresses an important concept in interpersonal relationships. I think the basic sense of this word is something close to a feeling of intimacy that includes bodily contact. It is the kind of intimacy one sees at meal times, when a family will sit in a ring around a big tray of food, huddled together, knee-to-knee. Or it is like two friends sitting in chairs side-by-side, with one friend patting the knee of the other while giving personal advice. Two men sleeping together with their arms around each other is probably another manifestation of this feeling of “tinh cam.”

This may seem like a funny little story, but it has a bearing on our theoretical study of the sphere of intimacy. It also sheds a bit of light on the cultural-anthropological aspect of “sleeping.” The bedroom is a very intimate space where researchers seldom go. The sight of Japanese family members sleeping side-by-side (kawa-ji style) must seem a bit strange to those outside the culture. Recently, when thinking back on my first night in that village, I came to the realization that, somehow, that experience has a connection to our research into the intimate sphere.

Family and Social Change in Socialist and Post-Socialist Societies:

East Europe and East Asia

Abstract

The study of (former) socialist societies as so-called transitional societies carries a tremendous amount of potential to open new aspects in the research of modernization. The forthcoming international symposium on December 10^th – as a part of the Global COE Program of Reconstruction of the Intimate and Public Spheres in 21st Century Asia (Kyoto University Faculty of Letters) – will address modernization through discussions on family and social change in transitional societies of East Europe and East Asia. There are eleven presentations on seven countries (Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine, Poland, Russia, as well as, China and Vietnam) scheduled for the symposium, divided into a morning session and two afternoon sessions. We will discuss family change and family continuities in terms of demographic behavior and values, also in connection with external factors such as (1) marketization, (2) (changing) family policies, and (3) community building. In doing so, the present international symposium aims to stimulate fruitful discussions on the multiple paths of modernization, and also aims to position the modernization of transitional societies within current globalization.

——東ヨーロッパと東アジア——

かつて社会主義体制下での近代化を経験し、体制崩壊後は一般的に「体制転換」と呼ばれるような経済的・社会的変容を経験しつつある（旧）社会主義圏の社会に関する研究は、近代化論の研究において新たな視点を提供しうる大きな可能性を持った研究分野であると言えます。今回、グローバルCOEプログラム「親密圏と公共圏の再編成をめざすアジア拠点」（京都大学文学研究科）の一環として開催される国際シンポジウム「社会主義およびポスト社会主義諸国における家族と社会変動：東ヨーロッパと東アジア」は、東ヨーロッパと東アジアの体制転換を経験しつつある諸国を対象とし、これらの国々における家族と社会変動の問題を通じて、社会主義体制下およびポスト社会主義における近代化の問題にアプローチするものです。

今回のシンポジウムでは、7カ国（ハンガリー、スロバキア、ウクライナ、ポーランド、ロシア、そして中国とベトナム）を対象として、11人の報告者が朝の部と昼の部（1と2）に分かれて報告を行います。主要な議論の目的となるのは、体制転換期における（１）市場化、（２）家族政策の変化、（３）コミュニティ建設などの外的要因との関連において、これらの地域における家族がどう変化してきたのかを、家族に関する行為や価値観に関する各地域の統計データを通じて明らかにすることです。本シンポジウムはこうした議論を通じて、現在のグローバリゼーションの大きなうねりの中に体制転換社会とその変容を位置づけると同時に、近代化の中に存在する多様な道筋に関して、実り多き議論を提供する一助となることを期待しています。

このワークショップでは、ベトナム人女性の視点からみた、家族に代わる親密な社会空間の構成原理について検討します。具体的には、日本、ベトナム、アメリカの若手の人類学者と社会学者が、カオダイ教と婦人会という政治的位置づけの異なるふたつの組織をとりあげ、それらの活動における女性同士のつながりのかたちについての研究報告をおこないます。コメンテーターの先生方からのアドバイスをいただきながら、参加者全体で討議をおこないたいと思います。各ケースの分析から、これらの組織がもっている（１）疑似家族的な性格、（２）家族にかわる親密圏としての性格、（３）家族との対比では説明できない公共的性格を描きだすことをめざします。また、親密圏と公共圏の境界を往還してきた女性たちの視点から、ベトナムにおける市民社会の基盤となりうる社会空間の特徴を明らかにすることもめざします。

むらで過ごした最初の夜の思い出

2002年の秋、中部ベトナムのむらではじめて住み込み調査をしたときのこと。

むらの文化担当の役人は、自分の弟のタンくんの家を下宿先として紹介してくれた。当時、タンくんは20歳になったばかり。むらの文芸隊のホープで、歌と舞踊が得意。

住み込みをはじめた最初の夜、ベッドがひとつしかないので、二人で一緒に寝ることにする。秋の初めのベトナムは、夜になると少し肌寒い。一枚のふとんを二人で分ける。

でも、僕は寝られなかった。タンくんが僕に抱きついてくるのである。僕はその腕をそれとなく払いのける。でも、タンくんの足は僕の足のうえに絡んだまま。僕は家のまわりの竹林がうなりをあげているのを聞きながら、寝られない夜を過ごした。

次の日、タンくんのお兄さんの家に行って、やっぱり別の家がいいと訴えた。理由は言わないつもりだったが、家に来ていた近所のおばさんたちがしつこく聞くので、しかたなく正直に答えた。彼女たちは笑って、大丈夫だ、心配いらないと言う。この話を伝え聞いたタンくんは「寒いと思ったからくっついたんだ」という。

結局、僕はタンくんのお兄さんの家に下宿することになった。お兄さんと、奥さんと、小さい男の子が３人。僕のためのベッドも買ってもらった。

あれは僕の思い過ごしだったのだろうか。ベトナムには「ティンカム」（tinh cam［情感］）ということばがある。ベトナムの人たちの人間関係を語るための重要単語のひとつだ。「思いやり」とか「なさけ」という意味に訳される。僕はこのことばの基本にある感覚は、体をくっつけあうような親近感だと思っている。ご飯を食べるときに、ひとつの大きなお盆をかこんで、みなが膝をよせあって車座になったときの感覚。いすをふたつ横に並べ、相手の膝をさすりながら身の上話をするときの感覚。男同士が抱き合って寝るのも「ティンカム」の表現だったのかもしれない。

ふざけた話をしているようだが、これは親密圏についての議論でもある。あるいは「スリーピング」の文化人類学の議論にもつながっている。寝室はあまりに親密な空間すぎて、これまで研究者がほとんど入り込まなかった領域である。日本の家族が「川の字」になって寝るのも、よそからみれば不思議なことのようだ。ベトナムのむらで過ごした最初の夜の思い出は、どこかで親密圏の研究につながっている。最近、そのことに気がついた。

報告要旨：The purpose of this study is to critically examine the genealogy, development, and practices of rural resettlement movement in contemporary Japan. During the initial phase of the research, I place the empirical focus on a declining rural community in Hokkaido, Japan that promotes teinenkinō (retiree farming resettlement) for its own survival. Building on the foundation of the extended case method, my research reaches beyond the boundary of a given community and aims to delineate the structural forces that shape the locality. Based on a long-term fieldwork and secondary data collection, my study will not only provide a detailed analysis of the subjects and practices of rural resettlement and teinenkinō, but also will demonstrate how such a movement is embedded in Japan’s modernity under globalization and neoliberalism. Through my investigation, I conclude that the trend of rural resettlement and teinenkinō is socially embedded in Japan’s postwar development in three aspects: locality, food, and nature. Thus, the following work of my project is to delineate the socio-historical processes that shape the contours and contents of these three social categories in postwar Japan.

The Asian Center for Women’s Studies at Ewha Womans University is launching the Ewha Global Empowerment Program (EGEP).
The goal of our educational program is to empower women working in non-governmental public sectors and to nourish the next generation

I propose to present in my communication some results on transnational activities of migrant women. Transnational activities as scholars (Pries, Portes) refer to are not limited to one country but spread to at least two countries. Here I will speak about those cases of "mediatrices"in Brussels. They have created associations through which they are trying to consolidate rights for themselves and to other women confronted to similar problems, such the right to stay (in the country of destination) after marrying a legal resident, or after a divorce from such a partner, or the right to stay for those of their children that were born in country of origin..Some of these associations also dealt with issues of legal rights of women and children in their country of origin. In the case I am presenting here, I will speak about immigration from Morocco in Belgium and more precisely in Brussels, a capital city where close to 15% of the population is of Moroccan origin. Brussels presents indeed a particularity: while the majority of its population is French-speaking. It is located in the Flemish part of Belgium; thus two models of integration coexist within the same city, an "intercultural" one which is characteristic of the whole French-speaking part of Belgium, and a “multicultural” one which is characteristic of its Flemish part and which Flemish authorities are presently trying to implement in the whole city. Thus it constitutes a quasi-experimental frame of study, rich of dynamics in process, which allows to test my core hypothesis: that the intercultural model facilitates the development of transnational migrant women relatively to the multicultural one, which I see as rather inhibiting them.

A Month of Relay Lectures Is a Rich Experience

For a period of one month, from Jun 6th to July 4th, I attempted to take my turn delivering “Relay Lectures” - classes given as a series of lectures in relay by foreign members of the Global COE. When I say “attempted to,” these special lectures in sociology were in English, and so for me, for whom Japanese is the language I normally do my research in, this was a new challenge.

Luckily, I was able to base the predetermined lecture contents on three books I had published. The first part, on “Reconstruction of Economic Structures in Agricultural Societies,” was based on my Agricultural Village Industrialization Theory, the second, on “Reconstruction of Organizations in Agricultural Societies,” on A Comparison of Sino-Japanese Agricultural Village Organizations, and the third, “Reconstruction of the Concept of Agriculture Itself,” was based on An International Comparison of Urban-style Agriculture in Asia. It was somewhat easier to translate my books into English and then talk.

I was worried if everyone would be interested in agricultural issues, but the first class was attended by about twenty people, and we had ten in the final discussion, both international students from all over the world, and Japanese. What made an impression was that Jiro Morita, a JSPS research scholar from the Faculty of Education, attended from the first to the last lectures, and at each one was active in asking questions. A student from Africa, Musumari Patou (MD), had excellent English, and the way he would nod his head while listening each time gave me a lot of strength. A student from Holland, Lianne Elferink, offered some debate in the lectures based on the situation in her own country.

One feature of this lecture series was being able to see the current situation in Chinese agricultural villages in comparison with other Asian countries. Partway through, I gave a report at the Global COE’s “Community and Intermediary Sphere Research Meeting.” My theme was issues requested by regional governments in China, issue regarding the reconstruction of communities in agricultural villages within urban areas. Through a question and answer session, I was able to gain points of view on organization issues that stood for all residents of agricultural villages within urban areas and grasp the current status of organizations of administrative areas for agricultural villages within urban areas, which was very beneficial indeed.

Outside the lectures, I was also able to experience a number of things. A field trip to Kumano in Mie Prefecture with some undergraduates, and visiting Mt. Koya and the surrounding settlements in Wakayama Prefecture allowed me experience the issues of depopulation there. In addition, right before I headed back home, I was very glad to be able to meet up with a colleague I had done research with on China a decade ago, and enjoy a wonderful open-air meal on the banks of the River Kamo, one of Kyoto’s summer traditions. However, one thing I do regret is not having had the time to read the data of agricultural village surveys held by the Department of Sociology at Kyoto University.

【Title】

Family and Sexual Politic: The Aristocratization of the Thai Bourgeoisie

【Description of Lecture (strictly within 40 words)】

Thai hegemonic discourse of sexuality had been transformed through three processes.

1. the process of aristocratization of the middle class.

2. the convergence between Chinese male dominant social value and the Brahmin culture of the Siamese aristocrat.

3. the process of Victorianization of Siamese elites at the end of nineteenth and twentieth century.

These processes have eliminated the sexual value of the peasant culture where sexuality was quite ambiguous, due to its bilateral lineage system and matrilocality.

【Syllabus】

1st week : The Relative Autonomy of Female House and Matrilocality

2nd week: The Impermance of the Siamese Royal Family and Its Expansion through Polygamy: The Convergence of the Chinese Bourgeoisie and the Aristocrat from the Early Nineteetnth Century to the Mid-Twentieth Century

3rd week: The Victorianization of Siamese Aristocracy: The Masculinization of the Siamese State and the Surname

4th week: Thai middle class does not create its own value. On the contrary they adopt the aristocrat value. The reason for its weakness is related to the question that I have raised above: the process of aristocratization of the bourgeoisie through polygamy where social mobility is only possible through marriage, especially among the Chinese. So this week the topic will be "Why Thai middle class is so weak?". An attempt to answer this question is also related to the problem of the iliberal of Thai Democracy.

Advanced qualitative methods: Life stories and Family case histories

【Description of Lecture (strictly within 40 words)】

As narrative techniques, life stories and family case histories constitute unique methods to collect information about people's (semi) autonomous courses of action; and thus to reconstruct changing systems of norms and values which orient ther courses of action in private and public spheres

【Syllabus】

1st weekIntroduction: intensive vs. extensive empirical methods. Narrative empirical techniques as ways to reconstruct past courses of action, in given situations and given contexts. How to focus narratives on situated and contextualised courses of action.

The three functions of life stories.

How to construct a sociologically-oriented family case history over three generations. Focus on social-occupational position(s) and positional resources. Bourdieu’s theory of family “capitals” (economic, cultural, social capital). But “capitals” are not things, they are resources…Focus on efforts of parents to pass them on; concept of “degree of transmissibility”.
